DJ Saint M. Seagull blurs the line between sacred music and contemporary electronic production on his latest release, ‘Hallelujah’. Rather than delivering a standard original-and-remix package, the producer offers two contrasting interpretations of the same musical idea, spanning gospel house, dance-pop and immersive progressive techno. Released on 31 July, the project opens with the original version of ‘Hallelujah’, which centres around a melody inspired by the traditional musical phrase sung to the word “Hallelujah.” Instead of sampling an existing recording, DJ Saint M. Seagull recreated the motif on an electronic organ before manipulating it through processing and acceleration, allowing its liturgical roots to remain present without becoming overt.
The arrangement unfolds like a religious ceremony. A sermon-like spoken introduction gradually gives way to swelling organ, strings and choral textures before culminating in an expansive finale that feels equally at home in a cathedral or at the close of a sunrise festival set. The result is a track that comfortably occupies the space between gospel house, electro and theatrical dance music. The accompanying ‘Hallelujah (Enigmatic Techno Remix)’ takes the source material in a completely different direction. Rather than simply increasing the tempo or adding a heavier kick, the remix dismantles the original composition and rebuilds it as a deep, hypnotic techno journey.
Influenced by the slower-burning sound of early-2000s progressive house and the atmospheric aesthetic synonymous with the Global Underground series, the remix favours extended transitions, subtle tension and gradual evolution over immediate peak-time impact. Familiar melodic fragments emerge throughout the arrangement, transformed into darker, more introspective moments that reward patient listening.
Written, produced and remixed entirely by DJ Saint M. Seagull, ‘Hallelujah’ is less concerned with conventional dancefloor formulas than exploring how spiritual musical language can be reinterpreted through modern electronic production. It’s an ambitious release that offers two distinct listening experiences while remaining connected by the same underlying melodic thread.
