Ma Sha returns with her new EP Hydrofall, set for release on July 31 via Steel City Dance Discs. Following the buoyant lead single ‘Sealegs’, she now shares an exclusive premiere of ‘Aluga’ via FourFour. The EP marks a new creative high for the New York-based producer and DJ, known for her emotionally charged productions and dynamic, genre-blurring sets. With past releases on acclaimed imprints including Nervous Horizon, TraTraTrax, Nerve Collect, and her own label Kindergarten, Ma Sha has become a vital voice in experimental club music. This summer, she will debut her first solo live set at MUTEK Montreal, signaling yet another bold evolution in her artistic trajectory.
Rooted in improvisation and intuitive process, Ma Sha’s music merges raw emotion with rhythmic complexity. Her sound is sculpted from pulsing low-end, broken percussion, and textural synth work that feels both deliberate and untamed. A former breakdancer, her connection to movement remains central to her music, and her tracks often feel like extensions of physical impulse. As co-founder of the experimental duo Sha Ru and head of the award-winning label Kindergarten, she has carved a space that resists easy definition. Whether DJing internationally or recording in solitude, she consistently delivers work that is bold, immersive, and emotionally resonant.
The EP arrives as Ma Sha’s most intuitive release yet; what she describes as “a sonic trust fall”: letting go of the plan and letting the music guide her. “This record is me diving in—no map, no plan—improvised, messy, but carried by a current I trusted.”
The exclusive premiere of ‘Aluga’ reveals the meditative core of Hydrofall. In contrast to the EP’s high-impact moments, ‘Aluga’ drifts into dub-washed territory, with twangy tones dissolving into vast expanses of reverb and subtly shifting percussion. The track seems submerged and weightless, like hearing sound ripple through water. Built from instinct rather than structure, the track captures Ma Sha’s embrace of uncertainty and surrender.
